FAD kick started Fashion Futures 2015 with a research visit to the V&A Gallery, where students were asked to ‘Look East’ at the historical and artistic heritage of Korea and Japan for this year’s project brief.
The new FAD students were greeted by the FAD team with a ‘Don’t Panic Pack’ of goodies including sketchbooks, drawing materials and information sheets to help them research and record while at the V&A.
The introduction session took place in one of the V&A’s grand lecture theatres. Young FAD volunteer Jenny kicked off the day with an informative presentation explaining what Fashion Futures is all about and what to expect from the project; including a film clip of the 2014 Fashion Futures Final just to get everyone excited about taking part!
Past Fashion Futures finalists Renee, Andrea, Nell & Shalom took part in a live Q&A panel, fielding questions from the new recruits such as “How did taking part in Fashion Futures help you personally?” 2014 FAD winner Andrea replied “Before taking part in Fashion Futures I knew I was into fashion, however I was always on the edge, After finishing the project it definitely helped me clarify the fact that I wanted to study womenswear and peruse it as a career. My confidence really grew and I am so happy I took up the opportunity in taking part!”
Students were then left to explore the Korea & Japan galleries to collate their research from colour swatches and sketches to patterns & textures and any useful information they needed to help them through the design process. FAD young volunteers were on hand to give advice and feedback.
After an afternoon of drawing and researching everyone headed back to the lecture theatre to conclude the day. The new recruits were really enthusiastic and could not wait to get started with their designing! The FAD team are really excited to have such an ambitious group of young people on the Fashion Futures project this year. We can’t wait to see what they produce in the workshops!
