FAD caught up with 2014 Competition finalist and runner-up Benjamin Callery at Graduate Fashion Week. We talk to the Bath Spa University star about his military punk inspired collection.
How has taking part in the FAD Competition helped you with producing your graduate collection?
Since taking part in the FAD Competition I have definitely become a more confident person, and this has really shown through my work. On a more technical level, I feel I have improved my sewing and pattern cutting skills and I’ve become better at sourcing fabrics.
What is the concept behind your collection?
My graduate collection is about taking punk fabrics and combining that with a military edge.
Have you named your collection? If so tell us what you’ve called it.
The collection is called “Marching to the Red Line”. This is because the collection has a real focus of soldiers on the front line.
What advice would you give to young people looking to study fashion?
Take time to learn, develop and then discover your aesthetic as a designer.
I would really love to work in a casual/outerwear department of a high street brand, like G-star or Topman.
