One of the most exciting new initiatives from FAD this year is the introduction and development of our leadership programme.
The FAD Youth Forum successfully applied to Youth in Action in Europe to fund a series of masterclasses to develop their own leadership skills, which in turn they could share with other young people in the hope of raising achievement, engagement and positive thinking among teenagers in London.
The project called Leading Ahead, has been running since 1st March and will conclude at the end of June. Over this period the 20 young leaders, aged 17-25 years old, have benefited from a series of masterclasses with professionals from different fields covering everything from ‘Public Speaking and Presentation Skills’ to ‘Emotional Intelligence – how do I understand others?’ to ‘Organising an Event’.
These regular mentoring sessions have helped towards personal development, giving the youth forum the confidence and practical building blocks to create and run their own community projects and activities with young people in London.
Through the Leading Ahead initiative the FAD Youth Forum aim to coach other young people to develop employability, educational and personal skills. Many of their creative projects have a theme of inclusion – promoting equality, integration in society and the idea of giving back to your community. This is a need across all Europe and the FAD Youth Forum hopes to develop the Leading Ahead as a project that could be a good example to other European partners.
Highlight projects so far include working with young people in care through the Who Cares? Trust; a fashion & textiles project with the Coram Fields Youth Group and a social enterprise project where young people have set up their own online shop.
