Stitching the Town Red, White & Blue

FAD guest blogger Randa Kherba, 17, reports from the 2012 FAD Junior Awards

“Once again, I was given the opportunity to transform into a fashion journalist for FAD – this time to cover the 2012 FAD Junior Awards final sponsored by George at Asda and held at Vauxhall Fashion Scout.

The theme of the show was Great British Design, with FAD finalists gathering their inspiration from the V&A’s British Galleries; their favorite Brit designers and everything and anything that reflected their own ‘British-ness’.

Out of over 100 ambitious teen designers from London and Manchester, 25 finalists were handpicked to showcase their garments at the catwalk final. The last day of London Fashion Week – and what an honour for these young designers to close proceedings with a collection celebrating all their hard work!

I stumbled upon a few V.I.P’s sitting in the front row:

Red, white and blue were the key colours used throughout the collection, representing the Union Jack flag in true British style.  Hints of tartan, leather and baroque prints represented British culture in all aspects, from Punk to the Victorian era.

And the 2012 FAD Junior Award Winner is…

Serife’s black & white leather cropped shirt paired with beautifully composed high-waisted geo print trousers won the judges over for its professional and contemporary style.

The Award for Commercial Design went to Denea Joseph, 17 (Newham) for her splatter print black leather design while Toyosi Salvador, 17 (Bexley) took home the Award for Creative Pattern Cutting with her military inspired coat with oversized pockets.

Two special mentions were announced alongside the three main winners. Robyn Yeang, 19, was praised for her amazing fashion illustrations, while Ezoe Robinson, 18, was congratulated for her astounding sketchbook.

Off to the after party we went, for the opportunity to mingle over a few cups of Pimm’s, and congratulate finalists over a few tasty treats and surrounded by their fantastic illustrations. Thank you FAD for a brilliant evening and for giving me, and all kinds of people these grand chances. Keep doing what you do!” Click here for  more photos from the 2012 FAD Junior Awards.

“Congratulations to everyone who won and to everyone who got this far and saw their garments walk down the catwalk. I hope all the finalists have come out of this learning at least one new thing which they will carry with them into the future careers.

The amazing Sinatra brothers also assembled film clips from the night to compose this fab summary of the show with the aid of FADs VIP guest, singer NY. Enjoy!”
